YOU'RE THE MAN NOW GUAN

July 13, 2016 by Steve Marchese in art, public works

Are you kidding me with this? I spend a solid block of time online daily and hit the usual fountains of gorgeous, awe-inspiring imagery, but this is on some other shit entirely. If you could harness all of the exciting excitement of all the excitable kids of the world — the ones into Mecha and Voltron and Greek mythology and basically all 'warriors of scale' — and funnel that energy through a China that is so desperate to dwarf all other countries in the Use of Concrete and Bronze Olympics, you get this. Guan Yu stands at 48 meters tall and, jesus christ, is carrying the goddamn Green Dragon Crescent Blade. You could stack all of the instant geek boners in the world and never reach 48 meters. If there was an actual Earth-scale board game, this could function as a pawn. I'm out of words. Jesus.

LET'S GET PHYSICAL

July 07, 2016 by Steve Marchese in video, art, motion graphics

One of the great parts of being young is the opportunity to feed a seemingly endless sense of wonder. Everything is exciting and new (especially the Love Boat). And of the many wonders of youth, there's one that I believe is fairly universal — growing up around at least one kid who could contort his/her arms into some impossibly disgusting pretzel-like knot. "Hey Flex," (that was our guy's name), "do that thing with your shoulder." Flex would lock his hands behind his back and jerk them over his head without breaking the seal. It was freakishly astonishing. Flex could also do this thing where he could bend his thumb back (at the wrist) and touch his arm. It was never confirmed if Flex could suck his own dick.  Like I said, we were young and curious. That query was inevitable.

Albert Omoss is an incredibly talented visual artist who clearly grew up around a lot of people like Flex and probably spent way too much time in 2005 replaying Chris Cunningham's epic "Rubber Johnny."  Get lost over at his website and spend a few moments and just look at how hypnotizing this fucking thing is.

JEN STARK'S INCREDIBLE PAPER ART

June 06, 2016 by Steve Marchese in art

Jen Stark is incredible. Seriously, just look at this fucking thing. It's vibrant and weird and meticulous and pulsating. It's skillful and obsessive and overwhelming. It's just pure awesomeness.  I've loved her work for a long time and was really happy to see it get the wider exposure it deserves as the identity for the 32nd MTV Music Awards.

The image above is hand cut paper, foam board, glue and paint. HAND CUT! It's like the most happy blackhole you can image, or what would happen if the Sarlacc Pit swallowed a rainbow.

Inspiration via a post from the always reliable Colossal Mag.
